What is an architecture comparison, and why read one first?

An architecture comparison is about a design choice rather than two products, and it eliminates whole sections of the market in one read. Deciding you want a dual boiler removes every machine under roughly $1,500 from consideration. Deciding you do not need one removes the top of the market instead, which is the more useful outcome for most people and the more common honest answer.

What separates two espresso machines in practice?

Four specifications, in this order. Boiler architecture decides whether you wait between pulling a shot and steaming milk. A single boiler heats to brew temperature, climbs to steam temperature, then has to cool back down. A dual boiler holds both at once. A heat exchanger gets simultaneous operation from one boiler at the cost of a short cooling flush. A thermoblock or thermojet stores almost no hot water, which makes it very fast to heat and thin on reserve across a run of drinks.

Portafilter size decides your accessory market for years, because precision baskets, calibrated tampers, distribution tools and bottomless portafilters are all made in 58 mm first. PID temperature control holds brew water within about a degree instead of letting a thermostat swing several, which matters most on light roasts. Build and serviceability decides whether the machine is worth repairing in year six, which is the entire argument behind the Gaggia Classic and the Rancilio Silvia both still being sold.
